Radiocaesium transfer to roe deer and moose - a comparative study

چکیده
The paper describes the results of a comparative study of the seasonal and long-term dynamics of the levels of 1 3 7 Cs in roe deer and moose harvested in a relatively small area (100 km ) of central Sweden. Samples of roe deer (N=1084) and moose (N=1922) were collected in 1988-1997 mainly during the hunting seasons. It is shown that the long-term decrease of | 3 7 Cs levels in roe deer and moose is dominated by l 3 7 Cs radioactive disintegration. Any other possible long-term trend of 1 3 7 Cs levels in these game animals is obscured by large and non-systematic between-years variations. A significant correlation between the levels in roe deer in August-Sept em ber and the levels of 1 3 7 Cs in moose in October was observed. This correlation can explain 70 % of the between-years variation of the levels of l 3 7 Cs in moose. The presented data indicate that there is a strong relationship between ingestion of fungi and the levels of 1 3 7 Cs levels in roe deer and moose during the summer-autumn period. This seems to be the main cause for the seasonal variations of , 3 7 C s levels in roe deer and the between-years variations in Cs levels in roe deer in August-September and in moose in October observed in the study area. A significant correlation between the levels o f 1 3 Cs in moose and the amount of rain in July-September was observed, which supports this conclusion. The number of fruit bodies of Suillus variegatus counted in six experimental plots located in the study area also confirms the important role of the ingestion of mushrooms. Estimations of the mushroom contribution to the total daily ingestion of food by roe deer and moose are provided.

Prey Selection of Scandinavian Wolves: Single Large or Several Small?
Research on large predator-prey interactions are often limited to the predators' primary prey, with the potential for prey switching in systems with multiple ungulate species rarely investigated. We evaluated wolf (Canis lupus) prey selection at two different spatial scales, i.e., inter- and intra-territorial, using data from 409 ungulate wolf-kills in an expanding wolf population in Scandinavi...

Radiocaesium contamination of wild boar (Sus scrofa) still achieves several ten thousands Bq kg fresh weight (FW) in some areas of Germany, concurrently exhibiting an extraordinary variability. In the Bavarian Forest, for instance, activity levels ranged between 82 and 40,000 Bq kg FW in 2004, with maximum and minimum values occurring at almost the same location within one week (Fielitz, 2005)....
متن کاملYew (Taxus) intoxication in free-ranging cervids
Wild ruminants, including deer species (cervids) have incorrectly been regarded as refractory to yew (Taxus) intoxication. This assumption has been based upon anecdotal observations of individual deer browsing on yew over time without apparent adverse effect. A single case of yew intoxication was reported in a free-ranging Norwegian moose (Alces alces) in 2008. The current report describes five...

About fifty larvae of Cephenemyia ulrichii Brauer (Diptera: Oestridae), some of them nearly full-grown third instars, were found in the throat of a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in June 2007 near Helsinki in Finland. The parasite is considered to be host specific, occurring only in the moose (Alces alces), and this paper is apparently the first report of a successful infestation in an aberrant...
متن کاملDisturbance by large herbivores in boreal forests with special reference to moose
Moose and reindeer occur in large populations in the Fennoscandian boreal forests, and also roe deer occurs in dense populations in Sweden and Norway. These large herbivores affect the structure and function of the forest ecosystems. During periods of high densities discussions arise about the impact of these herbivores on e.g. economic forest trees and preservation of biodiversity. The aim of ...
